Tableau is designed for data science! Move beyond the basics and delve deeper into the power of this data visualization software. Learn how to deal with messy or badly formatted data, use Tableau to answer key data analytics questions, and visualize your results with maps and dashboards. Tableau-certified "Zen Master" Matt Francis will show you how to use parameters to enhance visualizations, create cross-source filters, use data extracts to optimize slow connections, and much more.

The training starts with one of the most important features in Tableau: the difference between the green and blue pills (discrete and continuous data) and how this affects every single action Tableau performs. Then find out how to add new maps and create more effective dashboards that maximize screen real estate. Discover how actions can link together sheets and provide greater levels of interactivity and performance, and how formatting can make an ordinary dashboard demand attention. Plus, get some bonus tips on performing date and time calculations in Tableau. This course deep-dives into the practical, applicable, and essential skills that anyone doing data visualization and analytics in a professional setting needs to have.

      Matt Francis

Senior Software Developer at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

Matt Francis loves data and using Tableau to create interactive data visualizations.

By day he works at one of the world's largest DNA sequencing labs. There he creates Tableau dashboards that enable the DNA sequencing pipelines to keep track of the thousands of DNA samples and the data they produce. Since discovering and installing Tableau four years ago, he has become a champion for Tableau within the institute and loves to share the good news of data viz to anyone who will listen.

By night Matt creates vizzes on Tableau Public, on topics ranging from sunspots and Premier League injuries to a treasure hunting game, malaria, and more. He is heavily engaged in the Tableau community through his blog, which contains tutorials and commentary, as well as Twitter (about one-third of his tweets are Tableau related). He is also cohost of The Tableau Wannabe Podcast, which features a mix of discussion, guest interviews, and good banter, making it a must-listen for all who love Tableau. Matt has interviewed many of the biggest names in Tableau, including Tableau CEO Christian Chabot.

He has attended the last seven Tableau Customer Conferences in London and presented at five of them, on topics ranging from storytelling with data to dashboard design and expert tips and tricks. He has also attended and presented at the last two Tableau Conferences in the United States.

Matt's proudest achievement to date occurred in 2014 when his contributions were acknowledged with the title of Tableau Zen Master.

  • Welcome

    - [Matt] Hi, I'm Matt Francis. Tableau's Headmaster and wannabe data rock star, and welcome to Tableau 10 for Data Science. In this course, we'll look at the difference between discreet and continuous data. An important implication this has with every aspect of Tableau. You'll see how to connect to data and how creating data extracts can optimize the end user experience if our data connection is slow. You'll learn how we can transform our data by cleaning, splitting, pivoting, and merging. And explore the new cross data source joins that are now possible with data integration. You'll discover new ways to analyze your data, that is as easy as dragging and dropping items onto your canvas, such as, quick highlighting, reference lines, and the new clustering function. We'll look at some of the new ways to create beautiful maps using Mapbox. I'll show you how to create personalized, dynamic visualizations by using parameters to take user input and drive the visualization. The course covers…
